Intermediate-Advanced Chess

Chess board

Join author, professional chess instructor, and director of Over the Chessboard, Jessica Prescott, in this camp for kids with playing experience. Campers who can play a legal game of chess, can recognize checkmate, and may know some tactics will greatly enhance their skills at the Intermediate-Advanced Camp. Advanced tactical concepts such as combination discovered attacks, deflection and clearance will be introduced. Several chess variants will be played, including Take Me, Bughouse and Pawn Football. These fun games also augment the ability to think flexibly at the board. A heavy emphasis will be placed in three areas: pattern recognition, mental calculation, and conceiving long-term plans. Other areas of focus will be development of an opening repertoire and basic endgame patterns; both are essential for tournament players. This camp will implement the use of a chess clock, and campers will play “blitz” chess. Students will also be shown famous chess games and learn chess history. During the week, campers will have a chance to earn medals and other prizes, and a week-long tournament with game analysis will crown a camp champion at a Friday awards ceremony! As a bonus, every student will be given supplemental worksheets tailored to their level. Material covered is different each summer! Drop-off and pick-up in the carpool loop.
