Beginner's Chess

camper playing chess

Join author, professional chess instructor, and director of Over the Chessboard, Jessica Prescott, in this camp for beginner chess campers that focuses on rules and strategies of the game. Campers will learn all the special rules such as castling, promotion, and en passant, and discover exciting tactics such as pins, forks, and skewers. This camp will implement the use of a chess clock, and campers will play “blitz” chess. Students will also be shown famous chess games & learn chess history. Several chess variants will be played, including Take Me, Bughouse, & Pawn Football. These fun games augment players' ability to think flexibly at the board. Campers will have a chance to earn medals & other prizes, and a week-long tournament with post-game analysis will crown a camp champion at a Friday awards ceremony! As a bonus, every camper will receive supplemental worksheets tailored to their level. Campers will leave ready to play in a tournament! Drop-off and pick-up in the carpool loop.
