Digital Photography

Photographs are more than just snapshots. When taken the right way, they become dramatic personal statements with the power to last forever. They can transport you to distant landscapes, capture fleeting emotions, recall cherished memories, reveal the beauty of daily life, and even change the world. This summer we will learn advanced lighting techniques and Photoshop techniques including: advanced compositing, color manipulation, stop animation, and cinema-graphs. We will also learn camera techniques including how to effectively use shutter, aperture, and ISO to create this best photograph possible. This course is a chance to learn, in a way anyone can grasp, the basic insights and hidden secrets of photography. 

Equipment Requirements: a DSLR digital camera (preferable); if using a phone, camper must purchase an app (instructions given on first day of camp).

Herman Nicholson is a professional artist and educator. He received his B.F.A. from Savannah College of Art & Design and his M.F.A. from Columbia College Chicago. In addition to teaching photography at Providence Day School, he also works as a freelance photographer here in Charlotte. His clients have included Charlotte Magazine, The Harvey B. Gantt Center, Whole Foods Market, Random House Publishing, Omni Hotels, and the Arts & Science Council among others. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Mint Museum in Charlotte.
