Writing the College Application Essay

Need some expert advice as you polish that essay? Lacking motivation to get started? This is the workshop for the rising senior facing down that college application! Led by Dr. Clint Crumley, this workshop will not only produce at least one full-length essay in response to a prompt from the Common App, but will also heighten writing skills in general. Sessions will include strategies on finding the best topics, on achieving a distinctive voice, and on writing that one dazzling sentence that suggests ”strong writer” to college admissions staff. The goal is to finish the week with a refreshed sensitivity toward syntax and rhetoric and merited confidence as writers heading into the school year. Workshop size will be limited in order for students to benefit from one-on-one attention and direct feedback on each draft.

Dr. Crumley has taught at Providence Day School since 1998 and chaired the English Department since 2005. In addition to teaching writing, syntax analysis, and literary appreciation, he runs Charger House, a shelter for homeless women, with the help of students and colleagues each winter.
