Camp Detail

MATI Karate

Help your child develop a “Yes I Can” positive attitude through this fun and exciting karate camp. Karate builds self-confidence, teaches respect and good manners, and encourages development of many life skills. Through regular practice, it improves self-discipline and helps children develop good habits, attitudes and ability to focus. The physical activity improves overall fitness and motor skills. This camp covers basic level kicks, blocks and strikes, as well as formal and informal techniques. On the last day of camp, students test for their next belt level. The test will include their color belt and requirements for their next belt. Campers should bring a labeled water bottle and wear comfortable clothing; karate uniform is optional.

Dynamic karate instructor Irwin Carmichael has studied karate for over 44 years and has taught at Summer at Providence Day since 1998. He is a ninth degree black belt in Kempo Karate and oversees several martial arts schools in the Charlotte area. Former Sheriff of Mecklenburg County, he teaches defensive tactics to local, state and county law enforcement personnel. Sensei Eliza Newell is a third degree black belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate, a level 4 in Balintawak Arnis, and is ranked in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Her passion for the sport began at a young age, and she has worked closely with Grandmaster Irwin Carmichael for many years.
